On October 6, teachers across Alberta began provincewide strike action, marking one of the largest labour actions in the province’s history. The strike follows teachers’ overwhelming rejection of a tentative memorandum of agreement presented this September, with 89.5 per cent voting no. More than 43,000 teachers cast ballots online between September 27 and 29. With this result, teachers began strike action on October 6. In the event of job action which includes lockout, the collective agreement is null and void. We are currently without a collective agreement and therefore PD funds are on hold. Previously approved PD funds will remain halted.
Presidents Message
Standing strong together for our students, our families, and public education. As your Local President, I want to express my gratitude for the incredible work you do each and every day. Now that we are well into the school year establishing routine and structure, I know the weight of ongoing bargaining, new legislation, and the increasing pressures on our profession continues to be felt. These challenges are heavy, and at times, disheartening. But I also know the courage, compassion, and resilience you bring into your classrooms and schools. You continue to show up for students, families, and colleagues; creating safe, welcoming spaces for learning and growth. That commitment is powerful, and it matters more than ever. Together, we are strong. We stand united in our values, dedicated to our students, and unwavering in our support for one another. While the attacks and uncertainty around us may continue, they will not define us. What defines us is our strength, our solidarity, and our shared belief in the future of public education. On behalf of Greater Peace Local 13, thank you for your courage, your integrity, and your ongoing dedication. Please know that your voice matters, your work matters, and most importantly, YOU matter. In solidarity, Jackie Basnett President, Greater Peace Local 13
